What to consider when making a Will

The main things you need to think about are:

  • Who would you like to leave your estate to? For example, this could be your spouse or partner, children, stepchildren, other family members or friends
  • Who you want to appoint as your Executors? These will be the people who are responsible for administering your estate and ensuring your wishes are followed. These could be family members, friends or a professional
  • If you have a child or children under 18, who do you want to appoint as Guardians?
  • Do you want to include any funeral wishes?
  • Do you want to leave anything to charity? Leaving money to charity can reduce the amount of Inheritance Tax payable

Making a Will is one of the most important things you can do. It is essential to get expert advice, in order to ensure that it is drafted and executed in compliance with the law. If it is not, then the Will may not be valid and your estate may end up being distributed according to the Intestacy Rules.

The right advice is important to reduce the likelihood of your Will being challenged on your death, which can lead to a stressful and costly process for your loved ones.
